This’s week’s article from Knixpert and holistic nutritionist Kailani King, reveals the secret superfoods that you should be on your menu.
As discussed in the post-‐baby weight pounds article, maintaining a healthy weight is super easy when you are well nourished. Heck, everything is easier when you are well nourished as every process within the body works well when you give it the nutrients that are required! So to make sure that you are running efficiently, we are going to be looking at the nine most nutrient-‐ dense foods that are rarely discussed within mainstream nutrition and health. I call these foods the “ Secret Superfoods”…
Secret Superfood #1: Shellfish
If shellfish is not apart of your diet already, then now is the time to start! Shellfish, particularly oysters and mussels are nutritional gold mines! Oysters are a great source of protein, omega 3 fatty acids, B vitamins (especially B12), vitamin A, folate, vitamin E, selenium, and zinc while mussels are a great source of protein, B vitamins, selenium, zinc, magnesium and manganese.
Secret Superfood #2: Sardines & Anchovies
Brains, organs, bones, the fermenting algae, and the microscopic microscopic marine organisms that they feed on, sardines and anchovies are loaded with everything that you need to thrive! The best part is that because of the small size of these fish, there is minimal risk of heavy metal consumption when compared to larger fish.
Secret Superfood #3: Purple/blue fruits and vegetables
When in doubt about which foods are the healthiest, always focus on the richness or darkness of the colour! This is because the colour indicates the concentration of potent polyphenols – bioactivecompounds that help reduce inflammation, atherosclerotic and carinogenic formation within the body. For example, dark purple kale has more polyphenols than does iceberg lettuce. So eat up those berries, purple grapes, red lettuce an kale, purple cabbage and cauliflower, and Okinawan sweet potatoes like they are going out of style!
Secret Superfood #4: Fermented food
Modern medicine is steadily building new connections between the gut microbiome – the world of bacteria living in the intestines -‐ and many health and diseased states. Knowing this, it’s a great idea to take care of your gut flora and a great way to do this is to eat fermented food, including organic yogurts, kefirs, sauerkrauts, kimchis, nattos, beet kvasses, and hombuchas.
Stay tuned for part 2 of this post, where I reveal 4 more secret superfoods.
